O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. Her family was from Wheaton, Illinois, and was a graduate of Wheaton North High School in 1981. The model was featured in a few commercials before moving from Illinois' Wheaton to Los Angeles. O'Grady made her debut in the industry by modeling at Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She played a role in the 1988 romantic comedic film She's Having a Baby. She then played a recurring part in ABC comedy China Beach with Dana Delany. In addition, she has guest-starred and appeared on independent movies and TV shows. Donna Abandando was her first major role on ABC's police show NYPD Blue. O'Grady's role as the tall and blonde secretary of the squad was played from 1993-96. Each of the years she won an Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance in the Drama Series. The entire cast as well as O'Grady won an award from the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance by an Drama Series Ensemble in 1995.
